Lighting Techniques: 

  • Side lighting - Side lighting not only helps to highlight the subject's shape. It also brings out textures. 

  • Foot Light - footlights, in theatre, rows of lights set at floor level at the front of a stage, used to provide a part of the general illumination and to soften the heavy shadows 

  • Up-Lighting – Lighting from below upwards. 

  • Front-Light – More used for a general wash, fewer shadows created 

  • Downlight – Creates a sinister mood creates shadows and a more mysterious look, 

Key Terminology 

  • General Wash, (A state of light covering something) 

  • Hard Edged, (Sharp edged beam) 

  • Soft Edged, (A light without a hard-edged beam) 

  • Cool, (Cold feeling colors blues, purples, etc.) 

  • Warm, (Type of light color including ambers, yellows, oranges, etc.) 

  • A breakup, (Type of gobo) 

  • Fade, (Slow Change) 

  • Snap, (Instant Change) 

  • Contrast, (Something opposing/different) 

  • Intensity, (How bright) 

  • Key, (Main lighting Illumination) 

  • 50% (Half Intensity) 

  • 25% (Quarter Intensity) 

  • 100% (Full Intensity) 

  • Angle, (Where the fixture is pointed) 

  • Gell/Filter, (Changes the color of a fixture) 

  • Spill, (Something you don’t want lit) 

  • Corridor, (A corridor of light, a long beam of light) 

  • Barn door, (Angles and controls light) 

  • Cross over, (Two or more fixtures crossing over each other adding depth & Dimension) 

 

  • Snap – Sudden lighting change. 

  • Fade- Slow change. 

  • Chase- Cycling on and off or moving along. 

  • Parameters/Attributes Used to control a certain part of a fixture e.g. The pan & Tilt 

DMX- 

DMX is used for data transfer and is used to control the fixtures from the desk. And can use up to 512 P 

Power con is used for fixtures as a power cable, these can be daisy-chained together to power multiple fixtures. Power con cables provide 20amp rating. 

13Amp- 

13Amps are mains powered and are a 3 pin Plug used to power fixtures Although fixtures should not be overloaded and should not all run from one particular. 

15Amp- 

15amps are a single socket with a heavier-duty wire they have larger earth pins so they will not fit into other sockets, these are used for conventional fixtures. And tend to be run on a dimmer that the desk controls the channels for, they tend to be 6 channels for each dimmer. 

16Amp- 

16Amps are Much higher power and can be used for more powerful fixtures and you can run much more of a 16amp socket (they can handle 1920watts 3520watts)

Continuous power (Full Power, Hot Power)

LX Bar

Used to rig lights onto

​

Patching

Adding Lights to the desk

​

Plotting

Programming the lights

​

Saftey Bond

A steal cable used incase the clamp fails acts as a second measure of safety, preventing catastrophic incidents
